Drone accompaniment for Raga Charukauns and a Signature Tune in Raga Charukauns
PureTones is a musical exploration to create drone accompaniments and mutually consonant musical scales. PureTones uses an envelope of overtones whose pitches are tuned finely as intended to support the desired musical scale. Here the PureTones drone and scale have been microtonally adjusted for Raga Charukauns.
Charukauns is basically the scale of 26th Melakarta Charukesi, but rendered from Kaushiki/Kaunsi perspective. Let us look at the details below.
Detailed Notes:
Let us denote the 12 musical notes in an octave as:
Sa re Re ga Ga ma Ma Pa dha Dha ni Ni SA
where notes beginning with a lower case denote Komal or flat notes, while notes beginning with an upper case denote Tivra or sharp notes, and SA denotes the octave of Sa.
The scale of Raga Charukesi is Sa Re Ga ma Pa dha ni. Raga Charukauns takes the same scale, but renders it in a Audava (Pentatonic) dropping Re and Pa in Aroha or ascending, and Vakra (zig zag) Avaroha or descending using all the seven notes.
The samvad (consonance) pairs are Sa-Ga, Sa-Ma, ma-ni. As a Lakshya (aesthetic choice), Pa and Re are used as Hrasva (short sounding) notes.
The Amsa (dominant) notes are ni, Sa, ma. The Nyasa notes (resolving notes for phrases) are on Ga, Sa, ma.
The Lakshanas of the Raga suggests this Tanpura tuning which is ma-SA-Ga-Dha-SA-Sa. Being a digital instrument, it is easy enough to synthesize a six string Tanpura. Some of these notes also come as harmonics, for eg, Ga also occurs as an harmonic of Sa. Subtle variations in the tuning allow for use of microtonal variations of these notes.
In a four string instrument, you would tune to ma SA SA Sa, with Kharaj Sa having a dominant Ga as harmonic, and that will take care of the requirements for Charukauns.
