Drone accompaniment for Raga Bihagda

PureTones is a musical exploration to create drone accompaniments and mutually consonant musical scales. PureTones uses an envelope of overtones whose pitches are tuned finely as intended to support the desired musical scale. Here the PureTones drone has been tuned for Raga Bihagda.

As the name itself suggests, Raga Bihagda is a variation of another very popular Raga, Raga Bihag. Let us look at the details below.

Detailed Notes:
Let us denote the 12 musical notes in an octave as:

Sa re Re ga Ga ma Ma Pa dha Dha ni Ni SA

where notes beginning with a lower case denote Komal or flat notes, while notes beginning with an upper case denote Tivra or sharp notes, and SA denotes the octave of Sa.

The scale of Raga Bihagda is Sa Ga ma Pa Dha ni Ni. There are two variants of Raga Bihagda: (a) single Nishad variant, which uses only Tivra Ni, and (b) two Nishad variant which uses both Tivra Ni and Komal ni.

The samvad (consonance) pairs are Ni-Ga, Sa-Ma, Pa-Ni and Ma-ni (in the two Nishad variant). Unlike Raga Bihag, this Raga does not use Tivra Ma. As a Lakshya (aesthetic choice), ni and Dha are used as Hrasva (short sounding) notes.

The Amsa (dominant) notes are Ni, Ga. The Nyasa notes (resolving notes for phrases) are on Ni, Ga and Pa.

The Lakshanas of the Raga suggests this Tanpura tuning which is Ni-SA-Sa-Pa-SA-
Ga. Being a digital instrument, it is easy enough to synthesize a six string Tanpura. Some of these notes also come as harmonics, for eg, Ni also comes as an harmonic of Pa, Ga also occurs as an harmonic of Sa. Subtle variations in the tuning allow for use of microtonal variations of these notes.

In a four string instrument, you would tune to Ni SA SA Sa, and that will take care of all the requirements for Bihagda.
